Lactic acid for cosmetics
Lactic acid is obtained from the bacterial fermentation of glucose and is found on the epidermal surface (it is part of the Natural Moisturizing Factor, NMF). It improves skin brightness and firmness, with moisturizing properties. It reduces wrinkles and enhances cellular renewal of the epidermis.
It reduces thickness and promotes exfoliation of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin). It evens out the skin's texture and improves the flexibility of the epidermis. It enhances the toning and refreshing effects of facial and body lotions. Lactic acid is used as a pH regulator (especially in cosmetic products and intimate hygiene products) and in purifying treatments. Slightly astringent, it can be used to prepare the skin for shaving.
Lactic acid derivatives are lactates (sodium lactate, potassium lactate, zinc lactate, etc.). They are humectants that maintain a high level of skin hydration. They also act as preservatives and improve the elasticity and hydration of the outer layers of the skin, providing a youthful and healthy appearance.
